Every busy mom knows that when it comes to who to care for, she is often the last one on the list. An empty vessel has nothing to give. Think of it this way, when you go on an airplane, often the instructions are this — if you are traveling with a child and the oxygen masks drop, secure your mask first and then assist the child. In other words, you have to be taken care of in order to take care of someone else.
Unfortunately, with the busy schedules that modern day families succumb to, basic self-care tips such as eating healthy, sleeping soundly, and exercising get pushed to the back burner. Demands, schedules, sports, homework, doctors appointments, and play dates all take precedence over mom taking care of herself.
For all the busy moms out there, you need to know the importance and necessity in taking care of yourself. Often this looks like reprioritizing, or reclaiming some time in your day or your week where you can focus on the one thing that you never do: yourself.
Moms, you have our permission to reclaim time for yourself and do the things that help take care of you so that you can continue to take care of everyone else that you love. Here are three self-care tips for busy moms.
If you fail to plan, plan to fail. Carving out a little time in your week and putting that on the calendar will be one step toward protecting that time you have dedicated for self-care.
Plan to treat yourself at least once a week, even if it is something as simple as a mani/pedi, massage, or bubble bath.
The healthier you are, the more energy you will have to take care of everyone else, so choose habits that keep you healthy and give you a return on your time. Eat meals at home instead of getting drive-thru. Or exercise, which gives you a return on your time by boosting your energy and allowing you to get more done in your day.
