Our hips are one of the biggest weight-bearing joints found in your body.  When the hip is working at its best, it allows you to sit, walk, bend and turn with ease.  There is a complex network of bones, muscles, ligaments, cartilage and tendons all working together to keep your hip moving smoothly and without hip pain.

Does your hip ache?  Are you dealing with frequent or constant hip pain? It can be confusing since there can be so many causes.   

Let’s breakdown some common hip pain culprits to help you pinpoint the source of your pain.

Hip Fractures

Age, disease and being a woman can increase your chances of a hip fracture.  Falls are responsible for 90% of all hip fractures.  Older women, especially those with osteoporosis, are more susceptible to hip fractures.   

Hernia

Over 5 million people suffer from hernias every year.  Typically the result of a sports injury, hernias can be referred to as “sports hernias”.  Overworking the body can cause your organs to be displaced and become herniated.  If your hip pain is sharp, sudden and located in the lower abdomen or groin, these all could be symptoms of a hernia.  

Tendonitis & Bursitis

There are lots of tendons around the hip that connect the muscles to the joint.  These tendons can become easily inflamed if overused or if you participate in strenuous activities.  Tendonitis is one of the most common causes of hip pain, especially in runners.  Located at the hip joint, this hip pain may be accompanied by swelling or tenderness to the touch and may feel like a dull ache.  

How Do I Treat Hip Pain?

A combination of physical therapy and medical help can help treat hip pain.  To get a solid diagnosis and to relieve hip pain, see your doctor.  Your doctor may prescribe nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to ease your hip pain.  They may recommend physical therapy for strengthening exercises and stretching to help your hip pain improve.
