The Best Cool Weather Workouts

Don’t let the cooler temperatures force you into hibernation. Read on to to find out the best chilly-weather workouts that can amp energy, burn more calories and improve your mood. Here are a few fun options we like to recommend:

Hiking

Enjoy the beautiful weather and go for a hike!  Hiking can burn as much as 420 calories per hour when you’re hiking uphill.  Research shows that hiking can build the muscles in your glutes, quadriceps, hamstrings, hips and lower legs.

Take Those Outdoor Workouts Inside

Be creative with your exercise of choice—there are lots of options for you. Rock-climbing, racquetball, running, cycling, rowing and swimming are all awesome indoor activities. Some other calorie-busting activities—that can be fun too!—include kickboxing, dancing, spin, or jump rope.

Running

No matter what season it is, running provides great benefits including improved energy levels and a major boost in mood. And get this—research shows that training in cooler temps can actually improve your running time. It takes energy to keep your body warm. The more energy required to keep your body warm, the more calories you’ll burn.

Check out these cold weather exercise tips for you:

  • Stay hydrated—hydration is just as important in winter as it is in summer. Be sure to hydrate before, during and after your workouts.
  • Protect your skin—don’t forget to slather on the sunscreen and grab your sunglasses.
  • Layer up—when you layer you are able to remove articles of clothing as your body temperature begins to rise.

Staying locked indoors won’t help you burn any calories, and could put a damper on your mood. Try one of these cooler weather workouts to keep you in top form, and then reward yourself by snuggling by the fire with a cup of hot chocolate!
