According to the CDC , 3 million older people are treated each year in the emergency department for fall injuries. More than 95% of hip fractures are caused by falls. Unfortunately, many people who have had a fall, even if they were not injured, become afraid of falling again in the future. This then begins a vicious cycle of avoidance of movement.

FALLS ARE 100% PREVENTABLE

According to a systematic review conducted on 33 different studies, placing patients on a fall prevention program, as well performing home modifications was shown to decrease the rate of functional decline, decrease fear of falling, and increase balance and strength in community dwelling older adults.

Here are some things you can do NOW to reduce your fall risk:

  • Get Moving: Staying active reduces the risk of falls by improving balance, strength, and coordination. If you avoid physical activity out of fear, it can make a fall more likely.
  • Wear Sensible Shoes: avoid walking in socks, and wear shoes with sturdy nonskid soles. The right shoes may also help reduce joint pain.
  • Light Up Your Living Space: Keep your home brightly lit to avoid tripping on objects that might be hard to see. Place nightlights in your bedroom, bathroom, and hallways. Place a lamp within reach of your bed to use when needing to get up in the middle of the night.
  • Remove Tripping Hazards in the Home: Ensure that cords, boxes, and furniture are not obstructing walkways. Secure loose rugs and repair any loose floorboards. Use non-slip mats in your shower and bathtub.
